This guide is for hosts who want to see how many people visit their Smoobu website and how many bookings come out of it. When you are done, Google Analytics reports your visitor numbers, and a conversion tag counts completed bookings.
What the built-in tracking covers, and what it doesn't
Smoobu's Google Analytics integration tracks your website's pageviews: how many people visit the site the Website Builder publishes, and which pages they open. It does not track booking conversions on the Booking Engine, and no booking revenue is passed to Analytics. With the conversion tag described below you can count that a booking happened, but not its value. If your website runs outside the Smoobu Website Builder, this setting does not apply; add Analytics through your own website platform instead.
Set up your tracking, step by step
- Get your Google Analytics measurement ID. Create a Google Analytics account and property on Google's side, then copy the measurement ID. It starts with G-. Older IDs starting with UA- no longer work.
- Add the ID to your website. In Smoobu, open Configuration > Website Builder and click Go to Editor. In the editor, open More, then Settings, then Google Tools, and paste your measurement ID. Your site must be published for tracking to run: .
- Count completed bookings. In Configuration > Booking Engine, open the Booking System Settings tab and find the Online Marketing Conversion Tag field in the Successfully booked section. A tracking snippet pasted here runs on the page guests see after completing a booking, so your analytics tool can register one conversion per booking. The page passes no booking data to your snippet, so the booking's amount, dates, or ID cannot be sent along. To see the tag fire, book once yourself: .
Deeper tracking is expert territory
The Google Tools panel also accepts a Google Tag Manager container ID, and many hosts ask about tools like Facebook Pixel. Setting these up, and everything that runs inside a Tag Manager container, is outside what the Smoobu team can help with; use the provider's documentation or a web-marketing professional. One detail worth telling that professional: when the Booking Engine is embedded in your site, the booking-confirmation page loads inside the embedded booking window, which tracking tools treat as a separate website from your own pages.
How you know it's working
Open your published website in a private browser window without an ad-blocker (ad-blockers commonly block Analytics) and watch the Realtime view in Google Analytics: your own visit shows up within moments. Standard reports take up to 48 hours to fill after setup.
